IN MY MUSICAL
OPINION
"I want to thank all the singers, sonwriters, musicians, producers, and everyone who gave of their time to make my life so much more enjoyable through their gift of music." - Mike Auen
What makes a song a hit song?  How do producers determine which songs will be issued as a single?  I really don't know.  We all have our individual tastes in music.  For me, some songs that are hits are great songs.  I really like them.  But others are not very appealing to me.  But I guess those in the music industry know what the public likes and will buy.

What makes a song a #1 hit song?  Well, if you take all those "hit" songs, which ones have the highest sales figures plus receive the most air play by DJs?  That determines the rankings on Billboards top 100 chart.  And that is what I wanted to know.  What were the #1 hit songs in the US according to the Billboard Hot 100 charts?  And that is why I started this video series.  I wanted to share what I learned about these #1 hits with you.  I get all my facts about these top hits from the website TOP 40 WEEKLY.  Check it out.  It's a great site for music enthusiasts.

I decided to create a video series in which I present (as your host Mister Mike) the #1 songs from from a year in rock 'n roll history, tell you who recorded the song, how many weeks it remained in the #1 position, play 30 seconds of audio from that song, and show a few pics of the artists.  And with the help of WIKIPEDIA, I always throw in a few interesting bits of musical trivia for each song.  Then at the end of the video, I give (in my musical opinion) my top 5 songs from that year, and tell you why they are my top 5.  And you will have a top 5 too.  And we probably won't agree.  And that's OK!

I took this video series from 1955 which is when Billboard started charted the era of rock 'n roll music, up through 1985.  Why stop at 1985?  After 1985, for me, a lot of the top 40 music was no longer appealing to me.  That rock 'n roll sound of the 60s and 70s that I loved so much and was a huge influence in my life, was fading and music was morphing in another direction - a direction I just didn't care much for.  Mister Mike quickly became out-of-touch with pop music.

And starting in 1963, I added the lava lamp.  Gotta love it!  Enjoy the videos!
